Farewell Joan (but hopefully not goodbye!)

Joan Wall (Chair of the Association) has recently moved from Nottingham to Hampshire.

Joan has made a massive contribution to Hockey in the Midlands as a representative of Nottinghamshire on both the Midland Women’s HA and since 2000 on MRHA.  She served Notts’ for many years as Chair, Secretary and Chair of Selectors.  Joan is known as a constitutional expert and a ‘stickler’ for detail and was involved in the formation of the joint county association in 2001 and had valuable input when MRHA was constituted.

Joan has played hockey for England and was instrumental for establishing indoor hockey in the women’s game and served a period as Chairman of England Indoor Selectors.

We wish her well and would like her to know that she is welcome any time and hope she gets to see Reading HC play regularly!

Her tasks and activities are being shared between the existing committee members with Lesley Evans taking the role as Acting Chair.

Sports Media Competition

The competition is for small groups of 11-19 year olds, they have to come up with an idea for a short film (3 min) with any of the Olympic/Paralympic ideals (Excellence, Friendship, Respect, Courage, Determination, Inspiration, Equality).

All entries will be judged by representatives from the media world, including; BBC East Midlands and the Broadway cinema. The winners will receive training from the Broadway, meet film makers and get the chance to make an Olympic/Paralympic inspired short film. This film will be shown at the Nottinghamshire Sports Review of the Year and a private screening at the Broadway.

The closing date for the entry is 3rd October 2010. All entries should be returned to myself by this date.

The Role of the Volunteer Coordinator

The crucial role of overseeing club volunteers

Clubs will benefit greatly from having a volunteer coordinator – a single contact who supports their volunteers, knows them all by name and what each of them does.

In this workshop, volunteers will learn exactly what this role entails and how they can become an even greater asset to their club by taking it on.

By participating in this workshop you will be able to:

  • understand the role of the volunteer coordinator
  • know how to interpret a club development plan and its volunteering implications
  • learn how best to recruit and retain volunteers and recognise and reward them
  • know how to access local, regional and national programmes to support the implementation of a volunteer action plan.

Being prepared to take on the role of club volunteer coordinator will help participants to play a crucial part in the future of their sports club.

Kind Regards
