Super Vets Hockey Trials (Men)

Saturday 16 April at Cannock HC

Most of the players representing the Midlands Over 60s or the Midlands Over 65s come from the West Midlands rather than the East Midlands, so let’s try and get more East Midlanders involved.

If you know of anyone in your club or in another club who would like to attend the trials at Cannock, please get in touch as soon as possible with Ray Jeff (email address and telephone number below).

The super vets hockey is really enjoyable and it is a bonus to play with people of the same age for a change.

It could lead to playing for the Midlands in the Regional over 60 and 65 tournaments (N, S, E, W, M of England) which will take place at Cannock Hockey Club on Sat/Sun May 21/22.

Sportivate

Link to Information Pack and Application Form

http://www.nottinghamshiresport.com/page.asp?section=939&sectionTitle=Sportivate

Sportivate is a £32 million national project that aims to get more 14-25’s regularly participating in sporting activities.

Sport Nottinghamshire will be coordinating Sportivate in Nottinghamshire and will be investing approx £160,000 per year between April 2011 and March 2015.

We will be looking to support and develop projects that will engage with and stimulate 14-25 year olds who don’t currently participate in sport or exercise. We are expecting to fund a wide range of activities across the county, targeting all sections of the community.

The funding available can help pay for coaches, equipment, venue costs, marketing or coach education.

Sportivate will fund 6 sessions after which there must be an opportunity for participants to continue with the activity.

For more details, please download the information pack or application form at the above link.

The deadlines for applications in 2011 are 21st April and 6th Sept.

I am happy to assist your club in applications that can demonstrate need and demand within your area for Golf, Hockey and Judo. Please get in touch via email or telephone.

FIH Ruling on Face Masks

The EHB confirmed today (follow link to EHB item) that after consulting with the FIH, the facial protection mask as shown below (which is, I believe is the OBO FaceOff Mk2 – admin), does not meet the requirement of the Rules of Hockey that: “field players … are permitted to wear a smooth preferably transparent or white but otherwise single coloured face mask which closely fits the face when defending a penalty corner.”

Banned FaceMask

This mask does not “closely fit the face” and is not “smooth”.

Further, the FIH Medical Committee is of the view that the mask poses a potential risk to an opponent in a collision. It does not therefore meet the further requirement in the Rules that “players must not wear anything which is dangerous to other players”.

All players, team managers, technical officials and umpires are advised of this ban as of today Friday 18th February 2011.

It should be noted that this ban applies across all hockey, senior, junior, outdoor and indoor.

The Passing of Don Nettleton

The Association is saddened by the news that Don Nettleton died on 8th December in The City Hospital.

His funeral service is to be held on21st December 2010 at 10.00am at St Michael All Angels at Bramcote (nr Sherwin Arms Roundabout) followed by a burial(probably private but not yet finalised) at Beeston Cemetery.

Everyone is invited back to Highfields from 11.00am for refreshments.

Please could you advise John Starling (starlingbradmore@btopenworld.com) if you will be attending the service and also if you will be at Highfields for refreshments as Andrew would like to get a feel for numbers.

Don was a great man of Nottinghamshire Hockey and is listed as a ‘Life Member’ of both the Men’s and Ladies Associations, pre-merger.

He will be sadly missed.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Funded Level 1 Umpiring Course

Please see below from Matt Bloor

I am in the process of setting up a Level One Umpires Course through Andy Barnes. The course is provisionally planned for Feb/Mar at Bilborough College (evenings).

Funding has been attained for the course, so I can keen to ensure that the get the right candidates trained, who will complete the assessment and then use the qualification in Notts.

The Level 1 Award continues to be the ‘passport’ to competitive 11 a-side hockey for club umpires. The Award is made up of three key parts (see below). Completion and accreditation is based upon the final part – a successful assessment on a match by a locally approved assessor.

  1. A classroom based presentation representing four hours and 30 minutes (delivered in two sessions and including viewing the Core Skills of Umpiring DVD and an examination paper). The classroom session is tutored by a county based England Hockey Board (EHB) approved tutor and it involves consideration of the umpiring skills required for competitive hockey and a detailed study of the Rules of Hockey.
  2. A minimum of three practice games. The practice games can be independently organised and candidates have up to two years within which they can complete. In some counties / areas candidates can umpire local league hockey. Hockey Umpiring Associations and / or counties can advise of local arrangements.
  3. An assessment on a suitable 11 a-side hockey match. The assessment can be on any 11 a-side hockey game where the two teams play within a competitive framework. 1st X1 school hockey is included however the match should first be ‘approved as suitable’ by the local umpiring association or county (if no umpiring association exists). It should be noted that most 1st X1 school hockey more than adequately equates with lower league competition.

Please ask anyone who wishes to undertake the course to contact me and register their interest and I will send further information once the specifics of the course are finalised.

Many thanks

Matt
