West Bridgford Monarchs – Best ever season!

West Bridgford Monarchs Hockey Club 2nd Eleven finished off a superb season for the Nottingham based Club, by winning the England Hockey National 2nd Team Trophy on Sunday 15 April 2012. The final was held at Cannock Hockey Club in the West Midlands where they played Lewes from Sussex, who were also last year’s runners up.

A tight game with limited clear goal scoring opportunities ended without a goal being scored, and went to golden goal extra time, before Will Good scored the winner for West Bridgford towards the end of the first period. This was the first National trophy won by the Club, and topped off a great season for the 2nd eleven, captained by Nick Robinson, as they were also crowned Midland 2nd Eleven champions in the Midlands Regional Hockey Association league.

It has been the best ever season for the Club, who currently have thirteen adult league (9 men’s and 4 ladies) sides playing in the Midlands and Nottinghamshire leagues. Out of these thirteen, nine of the sides were either Champions or Runners up in the 2011/2012 season which has just finished

West Bridgford Monarchs Men’s first team play in the Midlands Premier league, which is just one promotion away from National league. They came second to run away leaders Khalsa, inflicting on Khalsa their one and only defeat of the season, and ended with a first team Club record points total, and equalled their best ever finish.

The Ladies first team play in the Midlands Region Hockey Women’s League, and they wait to see whether their seventh place finish is enough to maintain their current league status.

The successes of our adult sides are mainly due to the large Junior Section run by the Club each Sunday morning. We enter sides at a variety of age groups in either local friendlies or in England Hockey competitions, and have also have a number of boys and girls selected for the Nottinghamshire County Squads

The biggest successes this season came from our Boys U18 side who were National Runners up in the England Hockey U18 Plate. They beat the U18s of England Hockey National First Team Champions Reading on flicks in the semi-final and set up an all-East Midlands final against Belper which was played down in Oxford. West Bridgford School pupil, Richard Lloyd-Mills opened the scoring on 3 minutes for Bridgford but by half time Belper had turned the game around and eventually won 3-1.  The Club also entered a Girls U12 side for the first time this season, and they did remarkably well making it to the Midlands finals and just missing out on a semi-final place

The Club is now gearing up to be ready for extra interest being shown in Hockey following a hopefully successful campaign at the Olympics by the Great Britain Men’s and Ladies Hockey sides. We are organising a number of events over the summer encouraging young and old to take up the sport again. Details will shortly be posted to our website www.wbhockey.co.uk. Interest levels have already been raised by HRH the Duchess of Cambridge visiting the Olympic Hockey Pitch and picking up a stick, and the Club also receives regular Tweets from one of its former players, West Bridgford girl Helen Richardson, who is one of Great Britain’s most capped players and hoping for selection this summer.

Mens County Championships

From our County Chairman:

For 2 years WE as a County have failed to produce a squad of players from our combined club ranks to represent Nottinghamshire in the Men’s senior County Championships and I hope like me you feel this is a situation that should be remedied and we need your club and its members to support initiatives proposed by our officers, county playing and coaching members to get it going again.

It was pleasing for me to hear at the start of the season that Jim Hewitt, Clive Morris, Adam Innocent to name but 3 are prepared to put their time and effort into the organisation required by arranging coaching, a selection process, a friendly match and the squad that will attend .

This is my plea on behalf of those wanting to resurrect the County team for your clubs support when you receive further finer details of the process and the event from the aforementioned.

Please don’t just bin this – I am sure there are enough players within our 12 clubs with 54 teams who would love an opportunity to;

  • Receive some coaching
  • Play hockey with some different players to learn and share ideas and skills
  • Try a level of hockey they may not have attained but aspire to
  • play for their county (again if they played S&Y and left with nowhere else to go)
  • Get away for a great social weekend away from the ‘usual company’ but with the common bond of representing Nottinghamshire and of course themselves.

Many of us take pride in being Nottinghamshire; please support the guys organising this and lets get our team back into county hockey.

Andy Barnes

Nottinghamshire’s Pool has been drawn and we are proud to announce that matches will be played at Highfields on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th May 2012.

  • Northamptonshire

There will be 5 matches per day (so 10 in total with all teams playing twice per day).  All will be played on the waterbase. (Final timings to be confirmed).

The Stick ‘n’ Pitcher and Cafe will be open throughout.

Please give this your full support and ensure it is the success it should be.

Highfields Men’s 6-a-side Summer League

Highfields Sports Club invites your club to its 6 a side Summer Leagues

After the success of last years men’s summer leagues we are hoping to increase the number of participating teams in this special sporting year celebrating London 2012. The 6 aside league will feature 1 pool of 12 teams playing on a Tuesday from 7:30pm-9:30pm.

The league is a great opportunity to socialise and enjoy hockey at the end of the season. The league could also be used as a fundraising exercise for your club. It would cost £4.20 per player per night (assuming a squad of 10) therefore you set your own match tax.

Each team will play each other in a league format and will conclude on Tuesday 3rd July 2012.

Every team will play 2 x 30 minute matches each week and matches will be played on our state-of-the-art Water-based or (hopefully) our brand NEW sand-dressed pitch!!! There will be 1 match for each team on the final night followed by an Olympic themed quiz at 9pm in the bar.

League facilities include:

  • Stick & Pitcher bar with pool table!
  • Food available all night
  • The Beehive Hockey Shop opened on prior request
  • Tournament winners receive a gallon of beer and £100 cheque payable to the winning club.

***Please note teams must provide their own umpires for matches and supply their own first aid kit and first aider.***

Score cards to be collected from the bar and returned with your scores completed.
